BR Indra Udayana is the founder and chairman of Ashram Ghandi Puri in Klungkung, Bali, bringing the work of Ghandi into Balinese culture and study programs. He has a degree in economics from University of Udayana and a post graduate master course on Ghandian Studies in India. He has held numerous positions in global youth work including the Youth Wing of World Conference on Religions and Peace. Indra established the Bali Conference on Religion and Peace, serves as chairman of Indonesia-India Fellowship Foundation, is a partner with Parliament of World Religions, and was a Trustee for the Global Councils of United Religions Initiative. He is currently the vice president of South East Asia Hindu Youth, and services on the Wisdom Councils of United Religions. He is actively involved in seminars, workshops and conferences in Indonesia and abroad, and often traveled with the now-deceased former Indonesian President KH Abdurraham Wahid. He has attended UN meetings including the World Peace Summit in New York, Int’l Conference on Global Preservation of Sacred Sites in Taipei, World Congress for Preservation of Religious Diversity in New Delhi, URI Peace Conference in San Francisco, Asian Interfaith Peace Forum, and numerous youth exchange programs all over the world. Indra is a veritable “mover” in the region. He is highly connected politically and his influence in the inter-religious sphere has enabled him to contribute immensely to the endeavors for peace in Bali. During the Mahashanti Puja (prayer for peace) that was held at the Kuta Beach for the victims of the October 12, 2002 Bali bombing, Indra’s prayer was echoed by hundreds of people of different faiths gathered there: “We appeal that God may strengthen the faith of the deceased families and the Balinese people so that the pain and anguish caused by the terrorist attack will not transform into hatred or a desire for revenge. Violence will not solve anything, and both the terrorists and we should understand this truth.”
