May 16, DAY ONE: Welcome to Bali – Transfer to Hotel (no meals) Upon arrival in Bali at the Ngurah Rai Airport in Denspasar, you’ll be met and transferred to your fabulous private villa with your own swimming pool and lush private gardens. You’ll be about 3 miles from the center of Ubud, the cultural and arts capital of Bali. During the drive to your hotel, our guide will offer brief information about Balinese life, its surroundings, and special information about traditional ceremonies going on during your stay. Unwind at your amazing villa and get ready for the beginning of your transformative journey! Accommodation at Furama Villa Resort

May 17, DAY TWO: Visit Royal Family and World Renown Healer (B , L, D) Wake up to a delicious buffet breakfast. You’ll be picked up at the hotel for a private meeting, tour and coffee/tea with the Peliatan royal family at their gorgeous palace. Sit in the royal gardens and enjoy dialogue and stories of historical Balinese culture from the inside. We then head to lunch at the historic Café Wayan – one of the oldest and best Balinese restaurants on the island. The afternoon will conclude with a visit to Cokorda Rai, the most world-renown Balinese healer in Bali. We will observe his healing practices with local Balinese, and you may wish to have a private session too. Doctors, psychologists, health professionals and others have come to study and observe this powerful shaman over the years. Welcome Dinner at Laka Leke Restaurant in Ubud. This beautiful garden restaurant is located in natural surroundings close to the famous Monkey Forest Temple, just a few minutes walk from the centre of Ubud. You’ll find yourself immersed in the sounds and beauty of rice paddies, lush gardens, lily ponds, AND wonderful Balinese foods. Accommodation at Furama Villa Resort

May 18, DAY THREE: Visit Sudaji Village for Cremation Ceremonies (B, L, D) Sleep in a bit longer and prepare for a journey into a deeper realm of Balinese culture. Today we will head to Sudaji, a tiny village in the remote mountains across the northern side of the Island. Bali Institute’s dear friend Zanzan, a Balinese social entrepreneur, cultural visionary and spiritual master, will be our host during our one night stay at his eco-bungalow “OM-unity”. We will be guests during a major village cremation ceremony, beginning with the entire village in procession. Accommodation at Sudaji OMunity

May 19, DAY FOUR: Cremation Ceremonies Continue (B, L) Awake to the natural sounds of truly being in a jungle. Meditation and yoga available, and then enjoy a home-cooked breakfast that won’t be found anywhere else in Bali, specially prepared by Zanzan’s family just for us. We’ll be in the hands of Zanzan, who will serve as our guide and cultural attaché for our behind the scenes understanding of the cremation ceremonies continuing on this day. A walk through the village and other surprises are planned. We return late in the afternoon. Evening is free to see local dances, shop, explore more of Ubud. Dinner on your own. Accommodation at Furama Villa Resort

May 20, DAY FIVE: Early Morning Market/Temple Visit/New Moon Kecak Dance (B/L) Early morning walk in Ubud Market to witness “real” Balinese ceremonial/food shopping by local villagers. Purchase your own sarong, and then head to Gunung Kawi for a private visit to one of the oldest temples in Bali built in the 11th century. Quiet, without tourists, we’ll have the opportunity to experience the mystery of these historical remains crafted in a side of a small mountain. Surrounded by lush green tropical rice fields – you’ll have a chance to meditate, listen to the silence and enjoy a small breakfast together. On the return drive, we’ll stop for some shopping then arrive at the unique Taksu Spa where we have invited several local Balinese women to join you for lunch and discussion. Optional spa treatments. Evening performance of Kecak Dance at ARMA Museum. The fire/trance performance includes more than 100 men and boys from the local community and is considered the most dramatic dance during the year. The two lead trance dancers are world-renown and this is not to be missed! Prior to performance, optional dinner at one of the best organic restaurants in Bali. Accommodation at Furama Villa Resort

May 21, DAY SIX: Early Morning “Golden Hour,” Visit to Senang Hati, Drinks at the Royal Family Owned 5-star Royal Pita Maha (B, L) Another early morning, but well worth it, as Bali is often referred to as the “Morning of the Gods.” Unforgettable sunrise with Balinese cultural icon Agung Rai to experience Bali through his eyes. You will be taken through the backroads into the real village of Ubud as it existed thousands of years ago, and enjoy breakfast at an ancient site. We’ll then travel to Senang Hati, a local facility for the disabled – a life-changing experience! Enjoy a fabulous buffet Balinese lunch prepared by Senang Hati staff, and see their amazing artwork and special dance performance (in wheelchairs). We will finish the afternoon at the Royal Pita Maha (owned by the Royal Family) for fresh juice drinks and spectacular views. Time for final shopping in Ubud and dinner on own. Accommodation at Furama Villa Resort

May 22, DAY SEVEN: Pemuteran/Temple/Market Visits (B / L) Take off to Pemuteran. Get ready to see the magnificence of Bali as we cross over to this spiritual northwest coastal village. On the way, you’ll visit Ulun Danu Temple, one of the few temples built on the water, and the fascinating Bedugul traditional market. Pick up special munchies and buy art items at much lower prices. Lunch at local restaurant. Arrive late in the day and witness one of the most spectacular sunsets on the island. This eco-friendly village – known for its United Nations award for its coral reef restoration work – lies in the shadow of mountains to the south and to the north is Menjangen Island, considered one of the best diving areas in the world. Pemuteran has the largest area of shallow coral reefs in Bali and is easily accessible, free of strong currents and waves making it perfect for swimming, snorkeling and diving. Pemuteran is considered the capital of the “unseen” or the spirit world. You’ll soon see why! Once you arrive, enjoy a walk on the beach, have dinner at one of the local outdoor restaurants, and just relax in the warm cool breezes of Northern Bali. Accommodation at Taman Sari Cottages

May 23, DAY EIGHT: Temple Visits, Village Dinner (B / D) Optional early morning ride to watch sunrise on a traditional fishing boat. Cameras and videos a must! Evening will include homemade dinner at Balinese village compound. Performance from local community if available.
Bali Institute and Global Leadership Adventures provides an exciting and unique cultural immersion program in Bali offering international leadership training, service learning and meaningful volunteer experiences. These 3- week (or two week) trips combine exploration, service with inspirational local Balinese organizations, and cultural immersion through meeting local villagers and personal experiences into this rich culture.

Your days in Bali will be filled with cross-cultural opportunities that include working with local organizations on issues affecting Bali, leadership training to integrate your learning, and cultural activities to get to know the local traditions, practices and people. On the weekends, you’ll embark on such adventures as white-water rafting, snorkeling in the most beautiful waters in the world, visiting sacred temples, bicycling through small villages and much more! Volunteer projects include teaching English and computer skills to Balinese youth, helping in a health clinic, assisting in cultural activities and more.

You will be staying in Ubud, the cultural arts capital of Bali. This fascinating village has all the comforts of home, but has a distinct essence that draws people from all over the world to witness its serenity, beauty and culture. We will all be staying together in a local village compound near rice paddies and village activities — close to the palace, temples and artist facilities.

Participants ranged from students in universities to retired executives, local Balinese groups, grantees from the Global Fund for Women and other organizational initiatives, poetry-slam winners, authors, African leaders and tribal dignitaries, Balinese royalty and political leaders, healers, and a variety of professionals, entrepreneurs, other concerned citizens. All had two things in common: a desire to play a more prominent role in social change; and a calling that Bali could be part of their transformative experience towards a new form of activism. About one third of the delegates were under the age of 35, and countries represented included Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, India, Japan, China, Australia, New Zealand, Cambodia, Thailand, Colombia, Peru, USA, Canada, South Africa, Swaziland, Argentina, Zimbabwe, Morocco. More than 40 facilitators from numerous countries helped guide a true cross-cultural learning experience that impacted every participant attending.
